Team Deployed by Gavin Newsom to help fix California DMV
Governor Gavin Newsom announced in January the creation of a new strike team to improve services at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Gov. Newsom stated the following regarding the DMV,
By any metric, California DMV has been chronically mismanaged and failed in its fundamental mission to the state customers it serves and the state workers it employs. It’s time for a reinvention.
The team will be lead for six months by California Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer. The DMV has managed to reduce wait times in recent months, but it has been struggling with several issues including issuing federally-mandated Real ID cards and improperly registering Californians to vote through the state’s Motor Voter program. Batjer was appointed by former Gov. Jerry Brown in 2014 and has focused on modernizing state government with initiatives to rethink technology purchases and update personnel practices. According to Gov. Newsom’s office, the ongoing performance audit of the DMV will be expedited. We will have to wait and see what the audit reveals and what Batjer and her team recommend.
